On the International Day of the Girl Child, an international observance day declared by the United Nations (October 11 of every year), Amrita RITE is pleased to report a good gender ratio of 51% girls to 49% boys at our Inclusive Education Program at AmritaSeRVe Villages.

Inclusive Education is the key element of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education. It includes educating and empowering children, including girls of illiterate or neo-literates, families in poverty, indigenous tribal communities and scheduled castes. Over the past 2 years, Amrita RITE has worked with young and adolescent children at 41 remote villages in 21 Indian States. Though many villages have far fewer girls in schools, Amrita RITE’s intervention has raised the awareness about education and overall we have impacted more girls than boys.

The holistic curriculum, based on Chancellor Amma’s vision, provides both ‘Education for a Living’ and ‘Education for Life’. Amrita RITE’s integrated methodology provides mother tongue instruction in class subjects, computer literacy and health awareness on topics such as nutrition, sanitation, substance abuse and adolescent health, as well as social awareness for the adolescent girls on topics such as gender equality, child labor and trafficking, all supported by sophisticated e-learning aids. Teacher training and tablet technology that is multi-lingual, collaborative and especially adapted for rural India to work without consistent Internet or electricity, helps improve the quality of education.
