A high-profile International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief, will be hosted by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham during December 18-21, 2011.
 

The conference will bring together renowned professionals seeking to apply advanced and emerging technologies for humanitarian applications.
 

Wireless Technologies
 

Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, will deliver the inaugural address.
 

Delegates will represent not only the best universities in India but also institutions of higher learning and advanced research in the US, China, Japan, Canada, Holland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Australia and Costa Rica.
 

Invited guests will deliver keynote lectures, teach focused workshops and tutorials and participate in panel discussions.
 

Among the keynote speakers will be Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Member of Planning Commission, Government of India; Dr. Dawn Song, Associate Professor of Computer Science, University of California, Berkeley; Dr. Shilesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India and Dr. Deborah Estrin, Director, Center for Embedded Networked Sensing at UCLA.
 

Research Papers
 

Of the 310 research papers that were submitted, 65 selected papers will be presented. These papers will be published in special issues of the following journals – Ad Hoc Systems Journal on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief (Elsevier); Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal (Elsevier); and the Journal on Multimedia Tools and Applications (Springer).
 

Worldwide today, there is an ever-increasing need to find solutions to complex problems. Wireless technologies hold the key to providing effective answers in many cases of environmental monitoring as well as addressing developmental challenges including social and health issues.
 

Dr. Maneesha SudheerFor instance, forecasting disasters enabling precautionary measures, making advanced medical services available in emergency situations or to remote communities through the use of telemedicine and health monitoring for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes can all be made easily possible through wireless technologies.
 

“The conference will offer a unique opportunity for fine-tuning international scientific research in this field with the specific needs of diverse humanitarian application areas,” says Dr. Maneesha Sudheer, Director, Amrita Center for Wireless Applications, and the conference program chair.
 

“With its combination of experts from leading research institutions and organizations, in addition to top public administration experts, the conference will provide a pulsating interdisciplinary forum,” she adds.
 

“Ideas will be given space to float around freely for beautiful solutions to come up,” she emphasizes.

They can network with potential mentors from across the globe; many of the invited international experts have shown keen interest in being available to guide doctoral students from Amrita and India.
