Programs
- 5 Year Int. MSc Physics with Specialization in Chemical Biology / Applied Electrochemistry - Integrated Degree
- M. Sc. Physics with Specialization in Energy Science 2 Years - Postgraduate
Chemistry, being a central science, encompasses the synthesis and study of molecules and materials, the exploration of their properties and the development of ways to use them in real life. The main objective of the course is to provide fundamental insight into chemical compounds with applications ranging from medicine, catalysis, nano technology, computational modeling, green chemistry, alternative energy sources etc.
The Master’s degree program in Chemistry also forms the foundation for doctoral programs in Chemistry.

Pass with Minimum 60% in B. Sc with Chemistry as one of the major subjects.
2 years, 4 semesters
The entire Programme has 75 credits which is split into 4 semesters. The programme prepares a student to take up research in the area of pure and applied Chemistry. The courses are a mix of fundamental and applied areas. Special emphasis is attached in developing analytical, numerical, experimental and computational skills.
This semester will have three core courses and one elective covering the areas of basic concepts in Inorganic Chemistry, Aromaticity, Stereochemistry and Reaction Mechanism and Group Theory and Quantum Chemistry which are essential to strengthen the fundamentals.
All the core courses are of four credits each and the elective carries three credit. In addition to this, there are two lab courses of two credits each exposing the students into semimicro qualitative analysis and Inorganic quantitative analysis.
Four core courses of four credits each on Coordination Chemistry and Organometallics, Reaction Strategies and Functional Group Interconversions, Molecular Spectroscopy, Chemical Thermodynamics and Equilibria are in the second semester. In addition to this there will be two organic chemistry lab courses of two credits each, one on quantitative analysis and the other on qualitative analysis.
Courses in the areas like Solid State and Bioinorganic Chemistry, Heterocyclic and Natural Products Chemistry, Physical Methods in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Energy Systems and Kinetics and Computational Chemistry are introduced in this semester. All courses are four credits except computational chemistry, which is a three credit course. A course on instrumental methods of analysis lab provides the students hands on training using the available characterization tools in the department and institution. In addition to the lab course on physical chemistry also will be there in this semester.
The major content of this semester is a 10 credit Project wherein the candidate is expected to undertake a realistic project under the guidance of a faculty. The culmination of the project is a paper in a peer reviewed Scopus indexed journal. In addition to this students can take up an elective course from a pool of electives provided based on the expertise of the faculty.
