The first ever conference in India on Robotics and Automation for Humanitarian Applications (RAHA 2016) began at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus. On the side lines of the robotics conference at Amritapuri, its possibility in rescue mission in a disaster prone area, Chancellor of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi told that the seeds of research and development at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham had sprouted from the inherent yearning to minimise human suffering and help the deserving. "Totally unaware of the sea state, the fishermen venture into the sea and that led to the development of OceanNet offering internet connectivity for fishermen at sea to help them stay safe, lack of coconut climbers affected the livelihood of the rural women and now Ammachi labs has come up with a solution by designing robotic coconut climbers," she said.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham gets UNESCO Chair

The United Nations has officially made Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, TamilNadu, India's first-ever UNESCO Chair on gender equality and women's empowerment. The institution will be mapping out vulnerabilities of women and girls at various levels.Through research, study, training and an exchange of practices, it will try to find out the best possible solutions, replicable by others across the world.

The United Nations has officially made Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham India's first ever UNESCO Chair on gender equality and women's empowerment. The official bestowing of the UNESCO Chair on the Coimbatore-based university took place in Paris on Wednesday during a spiritual programme of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's Chancellor , Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham Vice Chancellor P. Venkat Rangan, said, "Even in the most advanced countries, there are very few such dedicated initiatives. In the coming four years, we will identify vulnerabilities of women and girls in India and ways of addressing. The focus will be vulnerability mapping as a result of security, education, and skill-development, social and cultural environment, climate change, disaster risks and health and sanitation."
