On October 14-15, 2016, TIFAC-CORE in Cyber Security hosted IoT Challenge 2016 workshop at  Amrita Vishwa Vidhyapeetham, Coimbatore. The workshop was a part of the tech fest of IIT Bombay, conducted in collaboration with I3Indya Technologies and IIT Bombay. Over 200 students and faculty participated.

The first day included talks by Prof. M. Sethumadhavan, Head of Department, TIFAC-CORE in Cyber Security; Dr. R. Krishnan, Adjunct Professor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; Prof. Gangadharan, Chairman- Council of Wardens and Head Students Academics, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham; Mr. Fazal Mahfooz and Pranav Sanwal, Embedded Engineers, I3Indya Technologies,  The welcome address was delivered by Prof. M. Sethumadhavan. Mr. Ashok Kumar introduced the workshop. Dr. R. Krishnan and Prof. Gangadharan also spoke. The induction ceremony ended with a talk by Mr. Fazal Mahfooz about their company I3Indya Technologies.

Topics covered in the first session were:

  1. Introduction to embedded systems.
  2. Details of ATMEGA-8 Micro controller which comes under AVR family. Details include: PIN assignments, Registers, Ports.
  3. Installation of AVR studio.
  4. Embedded C program – LED blinking.

Topics covered in the second session of the day were:

  1. Introduction of the Kit which included the programmer, micro controller board and TTL.
  2. Installation of the drivers for the program and TTL.
  3. Installation to XCTU (Terminal) used to observe the port operations.
  4. Connecting the TTL for transmitting and receiving the data.
  5. Usage of AVR studio software to build the embedded C program.
  6. Flashing the Hex file to the micro controller using AVR burner with the help of the programmer.
  7. Programming the micro controller for LED blinking.

 Topics covered  on the second day were:

  1. Interfacing the temperature sensor to the micro controller.
  2. Explanation of the concepts of ADC.
  3. Explanation the characteristics of LM35 (temperature) sensors.
  4. Connection of temperature sensors with proper PIN assignments to the ADC of the micro controller.
  5. Programming the micro controller to get the current temperature value and observing the output in XCTU terminal.
  6. Introduction to GSM, Interfacing the GSM with the PC with the help of TTL.
  7. Execution of various GSM commands to send and receive calls or messages.

Topics for the final session were:

  1. Interfacing the GSM with the micro controller.
  2. Programming the micro controller to execute the GSM functionalities using embedded C program.
  3. “Challenge” given to the participants regarding the LED blinking based on the user input.

The valedictory function began with Mr. Fazal Mahfooz and Pranav Sanwal giving away the merit certificates to the students selected for the next round.  A memento was given to Mr. Fazal Mahfooz by Dr. Gireesh Kumar and to Mr. Pranav Sanwal by Dr. Srinivas. A memento also was given to TIFAC-CORE in Cyber Security by Mr. Fazal Mahfooz and Mr. Pranav Sanwal. Then the vote of thanks was delivered by Sudhakshina. The workshop ended with certificate distribution to all participants.
