The ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI) is a sector member of the International Telecom Union (ITU) in Geneva; it also supports the activities of the Asia Pacific Tele-Community (APT) in Bangkok. IAFI in India focuses on research in telecommunications, with special emphasis on rural development. The theme of its 5th Annual Convention, recently organized at New Delhi, was Providing Connectivity to the Unconnected. A Young Professionals and Students Forum was launched; Prof. Satish K. Manocha of Amrita School of Engineering at Bangalore, delivered the Inaugural Address at the launch.
“The forum was launched to motivate youth in India to suggest and implement new, innovative solutions for ICT,” shared Prof. Manocha. “As such, I spoke about how young brains in our country should come forth with new ideas so that the unconnected can become connected by the best networks.” ICT stands for I nformation and Communication Technologies and participants at the launch included young professionals from industry, many with ICT patents, and students. Top Govt. officials were also present. The convention was organized over two days, March 26-27.
Prof. Manocha is part of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Dept in Amrita. His research focuses on Telecommunications, Mobile Communications and Digital Communications. During the annual general body meeting held on the evening of the first day, Prof. Manocha was elected Executive Member of the IAFI. IAFI and Amrita have collaborated earlier; two years ago, in March 2007, the Amrita School of Engineering at Bangalore had organized a three-day national conference on cybersecurity jointly with IAFI and CSI (Computer Society of India). We congratulate Prof. Manocha on his appointment.
