New Book on Machine Learning

Research associates at the Center for Computational Engineering and Networking (CEN) led by the Center Director, Dr. K. P. Soman, have published a new book on Machine LearningMachine Learning. The book titled Machine Learning with SVM and Other Kernel Methods is meant for undergraduate students of computer science and engineering. This is the fifth book to be published from the center.

Machine learning is a popular subfield of artificial intelligence. Algorithms developed allow computers to ‘learn’ and perform in a better manner. Learning can be through data models made from analyzing past data, finding patterns and framing appropriate rules. Machine learning is closely linked to fields such as data mining, pattern recognition, statistics and theoretical computer science.

Recent advances in statistics have made possible an entire new generation of machine learning algorithms, known collectively as support vector machines or SVMs. These algorithms are the primary subject matter of this new book. The algorithms are explained in detail with examples, Matlab codes and data sets. An accompanying CD-Rom provides additional information in using the SVMLight Software.

Dr. Soman“We have a strong research focus on machine learning here at the Center,” stated Dr. Soman. “My co-authors, R. Loganathan and V. Ajay, have contributed tremendously in making this book a reality. While Loganathan completed his MS (Research) while working here, Ajay is currently on deputation to Purdue University, USA, for completing his PhD. We hope that students of this exciting field will find the book useful.”

CEN was started in 2004 at the Coimbatore Campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. Since its inception, the center has completed several funded projects from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi, Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bangalore and Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The center also supports the research work of several MS, M Tech and PhD students.
