Kishore KopparapuKishore Kopparapu is a second-year M Tech student at the Amrita School of Engineering, Coimbatore. His main research focus is Computer Vision and Image Processing. Recently a paper written by him and his faculty guide, A. Baskar, was awarded the top prize in a national conference.

Titled, Fusing SAR Images using “A Trous” Algorithm Based Wavelet Decomposition, the paper described a new method for processing multispectral images. Multispectral images, in this case, images obtained from a synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) are widely used in space-based and remote sensing and mapping applications. Conventional methods of data fusion are often not satisfactory for these images; they distort the spectral characteristics of the multi-spectral data.

The winning paper described a technique based on multi-resolution wavelet decomposition, for the merging and data fusion of such images. “Standard integration procedure is based on the intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) fusion method,” stated Kishore. “We have developed a new method for integrating the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) features into multispectral images using the standard integration procedure and the à trous wavelet decomposition (ATWD).”

ATWD allows extracting features from the SAR image to integrate through an additive process into the initial intensity component. Several possibilities were studied, and the best results were obtained by adding the high order coefficients of the wavelet transform of the panchromatic image to the intensity component of the multispectral image. The paper was presented at the National Conference on Information Sciences (NCIS 2009) organized by the Manipal Centre for Information Science, Manipal University on April 24, 2009.
