“Vishuthainettam” program was organized at Amrita School of Pharmacy on April 16, 2015. Sampoojya Swami Purnamritananda Puri, General Secretary, Mata Amritanandamayi Math graced the occasion. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Aneesh T.P., Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Sri. Vijay Menon, noted management trainer and consultant, introduced the importance of Vrikshathainettam to students.
In his talk, Swamiji mentioned the significance of Vishu. “The malayalam word “kani” literally means “that which is seen first”, so “Vishukkani” means “that which is seen first on Vishu”. It is said that what one sees when one first opens one’s eyes on Vishu morning is an indication of what one can expect in the year to come. Vishu brings all material growth. Along with festivity, it reminds us of our losses as well. Agriculture has been vanished from Kerala. Even the vegetables used in our Vishukani are imported from other states. We need to regain the inner connection that we had with Nature. We need to protect Nature. A tree offers fruit and shelter. It also purifies water and air. It even gives shade to the one who destroy it. By the distribution of saplings to children, the younger generation can understand the importance of tree planting. So AMMA wants us to plant trees and contribute to nature. The younger generation should try to develop a strong relationship with Nature.”
Sri. Vijay Menon discussed certain case studies to emphasize the importance of planting trees. He started his talk with the example of Wangari Maathai who was the first woman from Africa to be honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. After the talk, Swamiji distributed around 250 saplings to the students and staff.
