Amrita Lasik Centre – Opening a New World of Vision

Amrita LASIK Centre, a new addition to the Division of Cornea and Refractive Surgery of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences was formally inaugurated on May 18, 2012 by Actress Priya Lal.

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a procedure that when performed helps a patient obtain clear vision without wearing glasses or contact lenses. The procedure precisely reshapes the cornea with the help of a laser beam.

Dr. Anil Radhakrishnan, Consultant at the Division of Cornea and Refractive Surgery explained the concept of LASIK.

“A relatively new procedure to correct refractive errors, LASIK offers an alternative to wearing glasses and contact lenses. Glasses are capable of good visible correction but they limit the field of vision. Contact lenses work well for routine cases of myopia but if not properly maintained, can cause disastrous infections. Over a period of time, contact lenses can also cause physical changes in the eye.”

“Amrita LASIK Center has a brand new Carl Zeiss MEL- 80 excimer laser system, the first in the state. This system possesses all modern features including small spot size, Gaussian beam profile and high frequency to ensure energy delivery that is consistent and accurate.”

“The excimer laser is used to remove a prescribed amount of corneal tissue so that the curvature of the cornea is altered, thus correcting the power of the eye.”

“The 1000 hz eye tracker in the system is one of the fastest eye trackers in the world and being coupled with iris registration ensures that precise treatment is delivered at the exact point. After surgery, one can be back working within 3 days.”

The doctor cautioned that LASIK may not be an option for everyone, even though the procedure itself is very safe and effective. Excellent outcomes can be expected, if scientific principles are adhered to.

“What we would like to stress is that here at Amrita this is not a commercial venture. The focus is substantially on patient safety and having a high quality program,” emphasized Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director, speaking at the inauguration.

Script writer S. N. Swami and Sampoojya Swami Poornamritananda Puri were also present at the inauguration. Others who spoke during the inaugural ceremony, in addition to them, included Dr. Gopal S. Pillai, Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology; Dr. Sanjeev K. Singh, Medical Superintendent; Drs. Meenakshi Dhar and Anuradha Rao, Professors of the Department of Ophthalmology.
