AmritaWNA Researchers are designing Wireless Robots for increased effectiveness in disaster management. The robots will be able to assist with distribution of medical and food supplies, relief & rescue operations, tracking & assisting citizens, emergency responders & doctors, evacuation, reconstruction and rehabilitation. The robots require interdisciplinary teams from Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Multimedia, Sensor Development, Wireless Network and Earth Science Departments.

Other Robot research projects unrelated to disaster management include ‘Wireless Robot Integrated with Sensors for Real-Time Monitoring and Assisting Individuals who are Elderly or Disabled’, and also ‘Real-Time monitoring of a Patient using a Wireless Sensor Equipped Robotic Arm’.

Wireless Sensor Network for Real-time Monitoring of Terrorists

This wireless sensor network based technology is aimed towards deployment in metro areas and international borders for monitoring terrorists in real-time. Due to the large size of India’s borders, it is difficult for the military to adequately enforce border security. This technology can be a significant aid in this essential task.

System Architecture: Monitoring and sensing over an area immediately after disaster is restricted by the lack of communication infrastructure and also the delay encountered in the deployment of sensing units. Here sensing is performed by network of flying robots, the overall architecture of the proposed system is shown in figure 1. System consists of network of flying robots equipped with visual sensors for sensing, a radio module for communication and a control module. Control station located at a remote location controls the whole network; it reduces the need for large infrastructure to be deployed on site of disaster which is a great difficulty. The Wireless Flying Robots in the network communicates with each other in an organized manner using wireless communication techniques. The multiple flying robots are positioned in the lower atmosphere form an ad hoc network to perform efficient monitoring of the disaster hit area in real time
