Amrita RITE- Rural India Tablet Education Launch

AmritaCREATE unveiled the ‘Amrita RITE-Rural India Tablet Education’ project on the 60th birthday of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi on September 27th, 2013 at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam, Amritapuri Campus, Kollam. The e-learning project was launched by Mata Amritanandamayi Devi by handing over a tablet to Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Government of India. The project will be initiated in the 101 villages adopted by Mata Amritanandamayi Math (M.A.M) through the new Amrita Self-Reliant Village Programme.

Amrita RITE is a unique tablet-based technology programme developed by AmritaCREATE targeting the learning needs of multi-grade rural students, as well as providing literacy training for adults. It is exclusively designed for the tablet format, taking into considering its screen size and low processing power. The tablet technology will help establish skills in basic literacy, language learning, science and mathematics. It will provide the support that rural children, in particular, need to stay in school .

RITE aims to provide two hours of after-school tutoring through tablet-based programs, as well as provide value-based literacy training for adults and children. The goal is a 100 percent functional literacy rate for rural villagers within 3 years.

The learning program is designed to work where there is little or no internet connectivity. In the first phase, the tablet educational applications will support different regional languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

AmritaCREATE also has developed similar tablet based adult-education programs that involve interactive educational applications. They help the user learn to write the English alphabet, as well as regional language alphabets. After the alphabet is mastered, the application moves on to words and sentences using immersion learning techniques.
