High performance concrete especially self compacting concrete (SCC) has got wide popularity in construction industry because of its ability to flow through congested reinforcement without segregation and bleeding. Even though European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC) guidelines are available for the mix design of SCC, large number of trials are required for obtaining an SCC mix with the desired engineering properties. Fresh state properties viz., flowing ability (Slump Flow), passing ability (J Ring), segregation resistance (V funnel at 5 min) are the check to determine the acceptability of SCC. But inorder prepare the SCC, it is necessary to add high range water reducers like superplasticizer. But all superplasticizers are not compatible with all the cement so it is necessary to check the compatibility of cement and superpalsticizer. Marsh cone flow time and mini slump spread test are required to perform to determine the saturation dosage and then to check the compatibility. Paste phase of the concrete determine the flow properties of concrete. But this flow behavior will change with respect to ingredients proportion and also with temperature. Rheological study using viscometer will give an idea about the change in rheological properties with temperature. High performance concrete lab is equipped with all these experimental setup to determine the above said properties of the mix.

Amrita Live-in-Labs® is a multidisciplinary experiential learning program that facilitates the research, development, and deployment of sustainable solutions for current challenges faced by rural communities in India. The program is designed to engage participants in a mutual learning and sharing experience by breaking classroom and laboratory barriers to implement theoretical knowledge to address real world problems. The program allows participants to study, observe, and interact with rural populations while living in rural communities to gain a better understanding of challenges in the areas of Health & Livelihood, Education & Technology, Environment & Farming, Energy, and Infrastructure & Basic Facilities.
In Civil Engineering Department, the interested students will get an opportunity to work in any of the villages and solve the technical problems in areas like water and waste management, construction techniques, energy and environment etc. by applying the engineering knowledge they have acquired through their study. The students can identify the problem at the end of second year and start working on it. The evaluation will be in fifth semester and a satisfactory performance earns a 3 credits. Students earning this 3 credits have the option to drop one of the electives in semester VII.
In today’s scenario, the construction of a real building is much easier than getting approval for the construction and designing as per the standards. Even if all the things come together at the right time, the on-site construction process needs so of care from scheduling to maintenance of the labours. So a Civil Engineer should have a holistic understanding of the civil subject to life skills like Time management.
So with the help of department faculty, a club is formed under ACSE student chapter (incipient) for B.Tech students, where they will be doing the design as per IS standards and construct a miniature building model. In order to ensure the systematic working of the club, Progress of the club will be monitored and students will be guided by the faculty advisor of the club.
Student Members
Totally 37 students have enrolled in this club (27 from 3rd year and 10 from 2nd year civil department). This 37 members have been grouped into 5 teams, each team consists of 7 to 8 members. Every week, each team will be given a task or work schedule and deadline for the completion of the work.

"My experience in Amrita was both valuable and exciting. One could never miss the scenic beauty of the campus (Ettimadai campus) and the weather of Coimbatore. The serine environment that I have experienced in the vast campus and its facilities is uncommon. I joined the college, like many others, with a fear of survival mainly because of two reasons. One being the kind of my school education which didn’t encourage much of understanding the concepts and the other reason being the department (Civil) which is pretty new and not having a history attached. Having said that, Amrita proved me wrong in my fears. I transformed into a totally different person after passing out of Amrita. This couldn't have happened without the well-informed, cooperative and resourceful faculty; good lab facilities that we had access to; unique opportunities for extracurricular activities like Gokulashtami, Anokha etc.,; I enjoyed the journey and I am always grateful to Amrita for changing my life!" »»

It all started and ended the same way. Six years ago, I entered Amrita fulfilling my parent's dream. But I was not happy about it because I didn't want to leave home. The whole journey from home to Amrita, I cried, for my own small world is not going to be the same. But Amrita had other plans for me. It gave me people who cared for me as if I was family. It taught me to dream and gave me opportunities to achieve them. The pleasant view of campus and disciplined rules of the campus gave me a good environment to achieve bigger goals. Amrita, you should not only be proud of yourself for taking in the best intellectual minds of the country but for also making them better human beings. Today, I m working as a software developer in (I-exceed technology solutions) Bangalore, which is just because of the knowledge given by my faculties and my department. The naive small-town girl is now an independent, matured and a confident woman. Insti, how can I thank you enough for giving me these wonderful people in my life. I will be forever grateful for the feeling you gave my parents on convocation. I bid adieu to you temporarily but you were and will always be my home and I will come running to you even if I get the slightest chance. »»
