Impact of Irrigation Systems on Farming Outcomes

Impact of Irrigation Systems on Farming Outcomes

Thematic Area : Agriculture & Risk Management

Project Guide(s) : Ms. Divya Sharma S. G.Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mr. Vineeth Ajith, Center for Wireless Networks & Applications

Amrita Partner(s) : Sreelekha, G. Navya Sree, Gudiwada Pavan Kumar Srinivas D.

Village : Kanti, Haryana

Project Duration : One Semester

Identified Challenge & Aim :

Farmers have been unable to meet irrigation requirements during the summer months due to insufficient availability of water. This has lead to low crop yields and a drastic decrease in income during these months. This project examines alternative methods for water conservation and management of available water resources.

The Study/Innovation :

The team first conducted a survey to understand social, cultural, economic, political, environmental, and technological factors and features in the village. They also went around the village and made a resource map. This gave the team a clear picture of the sustainable resources available in the village and helped the team understand the quantity of the resources available. After several group discussions with project guides and farmers, the team proposed a design for a low-cost automated drip irrigation system, along with sufficient awareness on water conservation techniques. Drip irrigation will increase yield and drastically reduce water wastage, thereby generating sufficient income for farmers and their families.
