Knowledge to Action: Driving Community Health Awareness Across Amrita Serve Villages

Building long-term health resilience in women and children is central to the mission of AMMACHI Labs and its Centre for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality (CWEGE), which together aim to equip rural communities with the tools to lead change from within. Our CO’s organized a series of targeted health education sessions across villages in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab, with a focus on empowering women and children through participatory learning. To make these sessions accurate and effective, the CO’s have been learning directly from local health workers like ASHAs (Accredited Social Health Activists) and ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse and Mid-Wife)

Health & Nutrition Awareness

Across four villages Bhiri, Giriya (Uttarakhand), Indupur (Himachal Pradesh), Kanti (Haryana), and Tharyal (Punjab) CWEGE Community Organizers led interactive sessions on nutrition, malnutrition, and healthy eating habits. Women were divided into small groups and encouraged to express their learning through creative tools like charts and posters, reinforcing their understanding of balanced diets. In some sessions, ASHA workers also joined to speak about health-related challenges specific to the region.

These awareness programs helped women reflect on the eating habits of their families, especially children, and recognize how small changes like reducing junk food or cooking with locally available nutritious ingredients can improve health outcomes.

Malaria Prevention Education

To address recurring challenges like mosquito-borne diseases, Malaria Prevention Month (April, 2025) was observed in Maira (Punjab), Bhiri and Giriya (Uttarakhand) villages of Amrita Serve. CWEGE Community Organizer Pallavi, along with local health workers, educated women and children about malaria symptoms, transmission, and prevention. Practical steps like covering water storage, keeping surroundings clean, and seeking timely medical help were shared in a participatory, accessible format.

In Indupur, Himachal Pradesh children learned about the dangers of tobacco through storytelling and drawing activities, helping them internalize the message in a way that resonates beyond the classroom. This approach not only raised awareness among children but also encouraged them to act as ambassadors of change within their homes.
