Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi, under the aegis of Kerala Orthopaedic Association and Cochin Orthopaedic Society, conducted the Amrita Spine Course 2014 on November 2. The seminar focused on lumbar degenerative disc disorders (low back pain and related diseases). Honorable Minister for Fisheries, Ports and Excise, Shri K. Babu, inaugurated the function and released the public awareness brochures on low back pain and scoliosis. Prof. Arvind Jayaswal, Professor of Orthopaedics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was the key note speaker. More than 100 delegates from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh attended the event.  Various treatment modalities for disc prolapse and back pain, including microsurgery and minimally invasive spinal instrumentation, were discussed by the panel of experts which included Prof. Arvind Jayaswal, AIIMS, New Delhi; Dr. Sajesh K. Menon, AIMS; Dr. Krishnakumar R., AIMS; Dr. Srijith Padmanabh, Mangalore and Dr. Mohammed Niyaz, Mangalore.

Dr. B. Umadethan, Professor and Head of Forensic Medicine at Amrita School of Medicine, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi has authored the first book of Forensic Medicine in Malayalam- “Kuttanweshanathile Vaidyasastram” (Medical Science in Crime Detection). “This book is written with the objective of imparting basic knowledge to the police trainees and officers so that they will develop skills in scientific criminal investigation. Stress is given to the practical aspects of Forensic Medicine and scientific methods of investigation,” shared Dr. Umadethan.

Amrita Kalotsav 2014, the combined inauguration of the arts fest of all schools at the Health Sciences campus included the Amrita School of Medicine, Amrita School of Dentistry, Amrita College of Nursing, Amrita School of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences and was held on October 27, 2014. Cine Actor Aju Varghese inaugurated the event. The 2014 Arts Fest of School of Medicine was titled Genesis; School of Dentistry was titled Pranaah; College of Nursing was titled Saarang; School of Pharmacy was titled Dhwani and Allied Health Sciences was titled Drishya. Established in 2002, presently Amrita School of Medicine, AIMS, Kochi, is a pioneer medical institution in India for higher education, patient care and research. MBBS degree awarded by the School was recognized in 2007 and Postgraduate Programs (MD/MS) was started in 2008. Since then, there was a tremendous thrust in academic activities and presently the school conducts 20 MD, 4 MS, 9 DM and 7 M.Ch. and 13 PG Diploma programs with an annual intake of 129 students. With the growing global demand for technical experts in medical management, we also conduct M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs in various allied health sciences subjects including the Rehabilitation Council of India approved BASLP program.
