The PhD in Law and Allied Sciences at the School of Law is designed to nurture scholars who seek to contribute to the advancement of legal knowledge through rigorous, innovative, and socially relevant research. In an era of rapid technological, economic, and societal transformation, law is continuously evolving, creating a growing need for interdisciplinary and policy-oriented legal scholarship.

Drawing inspiration from leading national and international law schools, the programme promotes a multidisciplinary approach by encouraging collaboration between law and allied disciplines such as public policy, technology, human rights, global governance, diplomacy and the social sciences. Doctoral scholars will engage with contemporary legal challenges while producing research that informs legislation, strengthens institutions, and contributes to public discourse.

The programme offers opportunities for advanced research in Legal Theory, Constitutional Law, International Law, and Commercial Law, enabling scholars to examine complex legal issues from both doctrinal and interdisciplinary perspectives. Through structured mentorship, academic collaborations, seminars, and research engagements, candidates will develop the analytical and methodological skills necessary to produce high-impact scholarship.

Graduates of the programme will be well-equipped for careers in academia, research institutions, policymaking, the judiciary, international organizations, and the legal profession, contributing meaningfully to the evolving landscape of law and justice.

Eligibility

Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. in Law and Allied Sciences shall satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

  • Candidates must possess a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from a recognized University with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or an equivalent grade under the applicable grading system.
  • A relaxation of 5% marks (i.e., minimum 50% marks) shall be granted to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/EWS/PwD categories, subject to the submission of valid supporting certificates, in accordance with the applicable Government and University norms.
  • Serving or retired members of the Higher Judiciary and Lower Judiciary shall also be eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks in the minimum qualifying requirement, subject to the submission of appropriate documentary proof of service.
  • The programme encourages multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research at the intersection of law and allied disciplines, including but not limited to technology, artificial intelligence, management, public policy, global governance, and the social sciences.
  • Candidates proposing interdisciplinary research shall demonstrate adequate academic preparation and aptitude in the chosen area of research.

Special Eligibility for Ph.D. in Commercial Law

  • Candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. in Commercial Law who possess professional qualifications such as Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS), or Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) may also be considered for admission, provided they are sponsored by the institution/organization in which they are employed and satisfy the University’s admission requirements. Such candidates shall be required to demonstrate adequate legal research aptitude and the relevance of their proposed research to the field of Commercial Law.
