The 11th convocation of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham was held on August 30, 2014 at the University Headquarters at Coimbatore. 4833 graduating students from all five campuses of Amrita University,, viz. Amritapuri, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Kochi and Mysore were conferred degrees.  Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, the Pro-Chancellor of the University, greeted the gathering, saying in his welcome address, “This is the occasion for the young minds to take off in their lives, to bear the flag of Amrita contributing to the society’s uplift and development as per Amma’s vision.” Dr. Venkat Rangan, Vice Chancellor, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, delivered the address, Amrita University on its path to realize Amma’s Vision. “Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is different from most other Universities in a few aspects. One is the strong aspect of Humanitarian Relief, the aspect of Seva and the spirit of Service that is inculcated to all the members of the University."

“Hare krishna hare krishna, krishna krishna hare hare………….  Radhe krishna radhe krishna radha govinda……” With Sri Krishna bhajans and slogans, Amrita University’s Coimbatore Campus celebrated this year’sGokulashtami on August 17, 2014. Gokulashtami is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanthi, the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna.  The festivity began in the early morning with Nagara Sankeerthanam where students and faculty took an idol of the Krishna across the campus singing His glory. Around 9.00 A.M. the procession of richly decorated floats from each department of the campus, screening various messages and sights from Krishna Avatar, began. Little girls and boys dressed as Krishnas and Gopikas walked beside the floats and a group of students singing and dancing accompanied them. The float which portrayed the Varaha Avatar rescuing Goddess of Earth and Vedas from the sea by the department of Computer Science and Engineering bagged the first place in the competition. Small idols of Lord Krishna stood in little huts all over the campus. As always Swami Jnanamritanandapuri distributed "Prasadam" for entire Amritians.

Book reviews by Prof Sudha Venkataswamy, Vice Chairperson and Assistant Professor, Amrita School of Communication at Coimbatore campus, are reported in two international journals, viz., Information, Communication & Society (iCS) and Media International Australia:  Incorporating Culture & Policy (MIA). The review of the book, A Normative Theory of the Information Society authored by Alistair S. Duff, gets published in the journal, Information, Communication & Society (iCS) in Volume 17, Issue 8, pages 1049-1051. The online version was first published on February 20, 2014. The book critically interrogates and asserts the need for equality in the social distribution of information in an information society.

A two-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) was organized by Amrita School of Communication from June 3-4, 2014. Dr. Binod Agrawal, Director, TALEEM Research Foundation, Dr. N. Usha Rani, Professor, Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore and Dr. G. Ravindran, Professor and Head, Department of Mass Media and Communication Studies, University of Madras were the resource persons of the program. The Faculty Development Program covered diverse topics such as Ethics in teaching and blended learning techniques. Dr. Binod Agrawal impressed the audience in his introductory address by highlighting the importance of technology in modern day teaching. He spoke about how technology obsolescence, storage, retrieval and transmission have affected the way we create and share knowledge.  The session was peppered with jokes and light-hearted banter about technology savvy students and challenges communication gadgets pose to the traditional classroom setting.
