The Pediatric cardiac surgery program of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences is designed to fulfill requirements of practice specially tuned to addressing challenges in our circumstances yet yielding results comparable to international standards.

Program Duration:

One year of pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship. Candidate may be offered an additional one year of advanced pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship based on their performance. Candidates will have to answer an exit examination at the end of the course. The exit examination will cover theoretical aspects assessed by a written examination as well as a practical examination comprising case presentation and viva voce.

Selection Process

1. The selection shall be made based strictly on merit and aptitude; an important additional consideration will be the long-term career plans. The purpose will be to identify and train individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves to a life-long career in pediatric cardiac surgery. Those who are likely to be appointed to a designated institution or those who have already been appointed will be given some preference.

2. All positions shall be filled through an open selection process, which shall consist of:

  • Pre-selection assessment of previous training and specific goals (application screening); reference letters from previous mentors will be particularly important
  • Interview to assess the candidate’s knowledge, attitudes and long-term goals.

Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must have the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Condidates should be from outside India. Candidates who are already appointed in centers or clearly identified as long term prospects will be preferred.
  2. Must have the following degrees or its equivalent from a university recognized by the Medical Council of India
    • MBBS and a valid registration in an accredited medical council or equivalent degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.
    • Basic training in Cardiac Surgery.
  3. Age not more than 40 years at the time of selection.
  4. Candidates must have a strong and exclusive interest in pediatric cardiac surgery.

Program Objectives

Graded progression of responsibility in pre-operative patient evaluation, and intraoperative and postoperative management of patients with congenital heart defects. The details of an individual trainee’s educational program depend both on the level of experience and expertise of the trainee and on the particular needs and resources of his/her home institution. The progression of responsibilities also will be tailored to one’s proficiency.

Outline:

A. Eleven months posting in pediatric cardiac surgery, conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass in pediatric cardiac operations and cardiac intensive care.

Training will include:

  • Exposure to pre-operative patient care especially in the sitting of critical and emergency situations including safe transport and pre-operative stabilization and intensive care.
  • Graded responsibilities in patient evaluation and surgical planning.
  • Assisting in surgeries of the entire spectrum of neonatal and pediatric congenital heart diseases.
  • Post-operative management of complex congenital heart surgeries and graded responsibilities in the management of post-operative care and emergencies.
  • Follow-up and counselling for patients operated.
  • Weekly teaching programs include 4 hours per week teaching- 16 hrs/month, 200 hrs/yr. This consists of case presentations, journal discussions, statistical meetings, lectures and seminars. Bedside discussions, ward rounds, clinical grand rounds and inter-departmental meetings i.e clinical-pathological and clinical-radiological meetings are organized regularly. The resident should attend at least 1 national/ international conference and at least 2 other CME programs in the duration of the course. Atlas on paper presentation should be made. The resident must maintain a log of all work done.

B. One month in pediatric cardiology with exposure to patient evaluation and follow-up and imaging techniques including echocardiography, 3D- echocardiography, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI and 3D reconstruction of cardiac morphology to assist in surgical planning. This also includes exposure to cardiac catheterization laboratory

C. One year advanced pediatric cardiac surgery fellowship involving scrubbing for atleast one surgery everyday and atleast twenty surgeries a month. This will include:

  • Graded responsibilities in operative management of the entire spectrum of neonatal and pediatric congenital heart surgeries. Graded progress in opportunities to perform independent surgeries or parts of surgeries depending on one’s proficiency.
  • Post-operative management of complex congenital heart surgeries and graded responsibilities in the management of post-operative care and emergencies.
