Abstract : In industrial and automotive domain, sensor-less speed estimation techniques are getting popular due to their compactness in design. Position sensor-based control techniques suffer from poor rotor position estimation during low speed and thus they are susceptible to instability issues due to inaccurate speed estimation. To resolve this issue, a sensor-less technique using novel stator current based model reference adaptive system is proposed which is seen to be more effective as it eliminates use of encoders, decoders, position and speed sensor. Proposed technique has advantages such as less maintenance, higher efficiency, low cost, noise immunity and compactness in structure. The need for a position sensor is eliminated by estimating rotor speed from stator voltage and current of the motor. The proposed technique is designed with induction motor using MATLAB/Simulink. The performance is compared with conventional stator current MRAS. The result analysis ensures reduction in settling time, overshoot and better accuracy.
