'Translation Studies' is an elective course, which can be opted in Eight / Ninth / Tenth Semester, offered in B. A. (Bachelor of Arts) English Language and Literature program at the School of Arts and Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mysuru campus.

To expose the students to the art of translation; to introduce them to the theories and techniques of translation; to provide them with an insight into the problems of a translator; to provide them with a practical knowledge of a translator's job..

Unit 1

Introduction to Translation Studies-History of Translation Theory - The Romans - Bible Translation-Education and the Vernacular - Early Theorists - The Renaissance Upto the present - Translation Theories.

Unit 2

Central issues in Translation-Language and Culture - Types of Translation - Decoding and Recoding-Problems of equivalence - Loss and Gain- Untranslatability - Transliteration Transcreation-Machine Translation.

Unit 3

Specific problems in Literary Translation - Structures- Poetry, drama, prose translations.

Unit 4

Translation in the global context - Translation of scientific, technical, medical and legal documents.

Unit 5

Comparative Literature and Translation Studies-Semiotics-Literary and Cultural Tradition Translation Practice.
