AMRITACON 2021 – 4th Amrita International Public Health Conference (Online)

The Departments of Community Medicine & Public Health and Respiratory Medicine of Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences will jointly organize AMRITACON on December 11, 2021, in association with The UNION – The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. A pre-conference workshop will be held on December 10, 2021.

Amrita Oration by Prof. Guy Marks

President, The Union & Honorary Professor of Medicine, University of New South Wales, Australia

Prof. Guy Marks is a respiratory and public health physician and epidemiologist. He is President and interim Executive Director of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. In this capacity he also serves on the Board of the NCD Alliance and the STOP TB Partnership. He is a member of the steering committee of the Global Asthma Network. He has led the Centre for Air pollution, energy and health Research (CAR, an NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence) since 2012. His main research interests are in chronic respiratory disease (asthma and COPD), tuberculosis control and the adverse health effects of exposure to air pollution.

Keynote Address by Dr. Kuldeep Singh Sachdeva

Dr. Kuldeep Singh Sachdeva has had a long journey of serving the public, a medical doctor (MBBS) with over 32 years of professional experience within the Indian government health system, a Chest & TB Specialist and a Public Health Expert by training. He is actively involved & is a member with a number of globally renowned professional associations and has over 80 papers published in scientific journals. Throughout his career, he has played an important role in strengthening health systems, promoting Public Private Mix in TB Control, supporting TB collaborative activities with HIV, Tobacco, Diabetes, Paediatric TB, & the scaling up of programmatic management of drug resistant TB. He also led the initiatives in environmental health, patient safety & vaccines.

A Pre-Conference Workshop on “Basics of Infectious Disease Modelling” by Dr. Nimalan Arinaminpathy (Professor in Mathematical Epidemiology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Public Health, Imperial College, London) will be held on December 10, 2021.

About Department of Community Medicine

The Department of Community Medicine, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi endeavors to serve the dual purpose of evolving cost effective primary health care to the community through its rural and urban training health centers and providing value-based medical education, by following a student friendly, need oriented and evidence based curriculum.

The Department of Community Medicine provides quality medical education to undergraduate MBBS students and prepares them to function as community physicians. The vision of the department is to enhance people’s health through innovation, education and research.

The mission of the department is

  • To provide training to medical students and health care professionals in public health
  • To promote research for innovative , indigenous solutions of health care problems
  • To assist in translation of knowledge into policy and actions

The department also runs postgraduate programs like MD Community Medicine, MPH, Executive MPH, and training for other allied sciences.

Scope of Our Work

  • The rural and urban training health centers under the department provides promotive, preventive and curative health services to the community and training for students in theory and practice of community medicine.
  • We work in close coordination and collaboration with Local Self Government, District Administration and State Health services across Kerala in Planning, Implementing and Evaluating various aspects of Health care
  • Our Faculty and Residents actively participate in Public Health activities in various parts of India and across the world

The Department collaborates with various national and international organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, ICMR etc on various research projects. The faculty members are instrumental in designing and conduct of various epidemiological studies.

    Instructions for Abstract Submission

    Please register for the conference before submitting your abstract. A ‘Conference Registration Number” will be generated during registration which you need to enter while submitting the abstract.

    Abstract Submission Guidelines

    A. General Guidelines

    • Abstracts should be submitted through the online system (email) following registration.
    • During abstract submission, the preferred mode of abstract submission must be selected: award/paper/poster
    • Abstracts should be structured as Introduction, Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusion and must be within the word count of 300 words.
    • Abstracts identified with plagiarism will be rejected forthwith.
    • All submitted abstracts will undergo a review process by the scientific committee before being selected for the conference, including the format of the presentation
    • The presenting author should have registered for the conference. Only one person will be allowed to present for the conference. Presenting author will be given the e-certificate of presentation and the co-authors will be given an e-certificate of participation, provided they register for the conference.
    • Submission of multiple overlapping abstracts is discouraged.
    • Abstract already published as an abstract or full manuscript or that will be published prior to October 31, 2021 cannot be submitted
    • The decision made by the scientific committee with regard to mode of presentation will be final while giving due preference for the mode of presentation stated by the author.
    • Last date for abstract submission- October 31, 2021
    • The list of abstracts accepted for Award presentation/Paper presentation/ Poster presentation will be updated in the website by November 30, 2021 and intimation will be sent to your registered mail id
    • All abstracts should be submitted via the online abstract link

    B. Guidelines for Preparation of Oral Presentation

    • The presentation MUST BE in English.
    • The presentation must be prepared for a total time of 8 minutes: 6 min for presentation and 2 min for Questions & Answers.
    • Please note that Session Chairperson has the right to terminate your running presentation in case you exceed the allotted time of 6 min + 2min.
    • Presenters MUST ENSURE that there is no copyright and trademark violation in their presentation. Appropriate source, reference must be given.
    • Presentation Schedule will be intimated in advance.

    C. Guidelines for Preparation of e-Poster

    • The poster must be in English with Times New Roman font. The slide must be in landscape view.
    • A single slide must be prepared containing the presentation in the format of Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusion.
    • The slide has to be saved and shared in the PDF format
    • The poster must contain the title, author names& the department/institution name which the presenter/author represents
    • The e-poster should be send to the conference mail (teenamj@aims.amrita.edu) by December 5, 2021
    • Poster presentation will be for 3 minutes followed by 2 minutes for Questions and Answers
    • All posters selected for the conference will remain in the conference website for the duration of the conference.

    D. Guidelines for Preparation of Award Paper

    Delegates who are interested in Award Paper Presentation are instructed to submit Complete Paper along with abstract on or before October 31, 2021, to __________

    Guidelines for Full Paper:

    • The submission should be in English with a word limit not exceeding 2500 words (excluding abstract, references, author name)
    • Research paper which has been submitted/ presented/ published will not be accepted
    • It should be in MS Word format (.doc/ .docx format). No other format will be accepted
    • The word file should be double spaced with Times New Roman font, font size of 12 and justified.

    It should be in the standard IMRAD (introduction, methods, results and discussion) format

    • The word file should contain title of the study, names of the authors and co-authors, abstract and main text
    • The abstract should be in the format provided above
    • The abstract should be submitted via the abstract link by selecting the award category and then the full paper should be sent to teenamj@aims.amrita.edu(link sends e-mail).

    Limit the text to 300 words excluding title, name of authors/ Institution and references)

    Use subtitles to mark the parts of the abstract (Please follow structured format, indicating following five parts of your abstract)

    • Introduction – provide the background to the problem/issue
    • Objectives – state the purpose of the study (research question) or a hypothesis
    • Methods – methods used to address the objectives
    • Results – the results obtained in summary form
    • Conclusion – a summary of your findings with recommendations

    Always define abbreviations and acronyms including standard measures. Place special or unusual abbreviations in parentheses after the full word the first time it appears. Each abstract must be complete i.e. it must include all information necessary for its comprehension and not refer to another text.
