The team of 2012 batch MBBS students of Amrita School of Medicine comprising of Aaditya Rameshwara and Jishnu Narayanan Nair won first prize in the Compos Mentis 2016 - National Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Quiz conducted by Kasturba Medical College, Manipal on September 15, 2016.  The quiz was conducted as a part of the IGCLA (Indo-German Conference of Lindau Alumni) programme at Manipal University. This is the first time that Amrita School of Medicine has won this prestigious award that is coveted by medical colleges across the country, and for which there was stiff competition among some of the best MBBS students of India. Amrita students emerged victorious after 6 gruelling rounds of quizzing including a visual round and a rapid fire round, involving 40 teams. Aaditya and Jishnu received the Compos Mentis 2016 trophy from Dr. Ullas Kamath, Dean of Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal. Both the winners were also given certificates of appreciation and cash awards of Rs 10,000 each.

This is the first time that any organization has bagged two FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards in the same year. The Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Amrita Hospital) has aced the FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards 2016 by emerging the winner in two categories of ‘Patient Safety’ and ‘Innovation in Medical Technology.’ The two awards were received on behalf of Amrita Hospital by Dr. Sanjeev K. Singh, Medical Superintendent, who is known for his work on patient safety and antibiotic stewardship, and Dr. Mahesh Kappanayil, Department of Paediatric Cardiology, who has developed a 3D printing model in congenital heart surgery. This is the first time that any organization has bagged two FICCI Healthcare Excellence Awards in the same year.

The Department of Ophthalmology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences secured the tenth position for rendering best ophthalmic services in the All India Lifestyle Hospital and Clinic Ranking Survey 2016 conducted by the Times Group. Amrita's Dermatology department also bagged thirteenth position in the survey. The ranking was based on a country-wide survey spread over an extensive six weeks of field work focusing in May, 2016.

Students from all disciplines across five campuses received degrees, including 36 PhD’s and 100 medal winners Amrita University, ranked No. 1 private university in India by global ranking agencies, awarded degrees to a total of 4,477 students, including 2,212 women, at its 13th convocation held at Coimbatore campus on August 21, 2016. As many as 19 out of 36 Ph.D. degrees were bagged by women. In addition, one hundred students across all the five university campuses received gold and silver medals for academic excellence. The faces of thousands of Amrita students beamed with pride and joy as they waited to receive their degree certificates and clicked pictures at the grand annual ceremony. The largest contingent of students receiving degrees belonged to the B.Tech. stream (1,896), followed by M.Tech.​ (473), MCA (196), MBA (191), BCA (188), B.Com (162), B.Sc. (131), MBBS (95), and others. All disciplines of study such as engineering, business, medicine, biotechnology, nanotechnology, arts & sciences, dentistry, nursing, ayurveda, pharmacy, social work, mass communication and teacher education were represented among the students.

This was the first time such elbow-level hand transplant had been made in the country. Dr. Subramania Iyer, HOD, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, AIMS, led a team of 25 surgeons and a 12-member anesthetic team in a marathon surgery that lasted 14 hours. This is the third double-hand transplant at the hospital.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Established in 2002, presently Amrita School of Medicine, AIMS, Kochi, is a pioneer medical institution in India for higher education, patient care and research. MBBS degree awarded by the School was recognized in 2007 and Postgraduate Programs (MD/MS) was started in 2008. Since then, there was a tremendous thrust in academic activities and presently the school conducts 20 MD, 4 MS, 9 DM and 7 M.Ch. and 13 PG Diploma programs with an annual intake of 129 students. With the growing global demand for technical experts in medical management, we also conduct M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs in various allied health sciences subjects including the Rehabilitation Council of India approved BASLP program.

The School is always in the forefront in introducing the internationally acclaimed state of the art infrastructure facilities and highly qualified and experienced teachers and clinicians for education and management of various health related disorders. In consonance with our vision and mission of establishing and maintaining an affordable, not-for-profit centre of health care excellence, the daily turnover of patients now touched to an incredible figure of approximately 3200 outpatients and more than 135 admissions per day.

As a charitable institution, in addition to the regular medical camps in urban, rural and tribal areas, the Amrita Family - a dedicated team of faculty, students, staff and ashramites are always in the forefront in extending medical aid in distress situations like tsunami, earthquake, floods with a spirit of compassion to all.
