He inaugurated the Amrita Cancer Helpline and released the cancer registry book on the occasion. Br. Anaghamrita Chaithanya delivered the benedictory address.  The website of 'Canserve' - an organization of cancer survivors was inaugurated by P. Jayaraj, Deputy Excise Commissioner. Dr. Prem Nair, Medical Director; Ibrahim Khan, Kerala CBSE School Management Association President; Dr. Pavithran K., Professor and Head of Medical Oncology; Dr. M. Dinesh, Professor and Head of Radiation Oncology; Dr. D. K. Dr. Krishnakumar R., Consultant Spine Surgeon at the Department of Orthopaedics, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences has been awarded Scoliosis Research Society's inaugural Robert B. Winter Global Outreach Award in Spine Surgery.  The Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) is the world's leading organization of spine and scoliosis surgeons, and is based at Milwaukee, USA. “I was deeply honoured to receive the award in the name of Robert B. Winter who was the past president of the Scoliosis Research Society and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society and a founding member of the Twin Cities Spine Center. He was an expert in the spine and scoliosis surgery as well as in research...The award was based on the experience in spine and scoliosis surgery, as well as on the ability to be a strong educator of surgeons in the region. The award worth 13,000 US Dollars facilitated visiting different spine centers across the globe,” said Dr. Krishnakumar.

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), Kochi installed the da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic surgical platform, in December 2014. Two surgeries has been performed using the da Vinci Surgical System. The da Vinci Surgical System is a tool that utilizes advanced, robotic technologies to assist your surgeon with your operation. It does not act on its own and its movements are controlled by the surgeon. The system is an advanced robotic platform designed to expand the surgeon’s capabilities and offer an option to open surgery. The da Vinci Surgery is a less invasive technique than traditional surgery. With da Vinci Surgery, the cuts (incisions) made in the human body by the surgeon are much smaller than the cuts made during traditional surgery. AIMS uses the da Vinci Surgical System for gastro-surgical, uro-surgical and gynec-oncologic surgeries.

The first center for integrated study, research and patient care in Allopathy, Ayurveda and Yoga will come up in Kochi, Kerala under the Amrita University. The Amrita Institute of Integrated Medicine and Research Center is planned as a center to integrate the holistic vision and therapeutic range of Indian systems of healthcare with the analytical, diagnostic and prognostic proficiency of modern medical sciences. Amrita School of Ayurveda and Hospital, Amrita School of Biotechnology both in Amritapuri, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center, Amrita Center for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine and Amrita School of Pharmacy – all under the Amrita University will be part of the integrated Centre, which will come up in Kochi.

The Department of Biochemistry at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences conducted a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on the topic Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies on December 19, 2014. AIMS Medical Director, Dr. Prem Nair inaugurated the program. Dr. Sajitha Krishnan, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, AIMS, delivered the welcome address. Dr.Prathapan Nair, Principal, Amrita School of Medicine and Dr. D.M. Vasudaven, Former Principal, Amrita School of Medicine delivered the felicitation. The inaugural function was followed by scientific sessions. Dr. Sreekumari S., Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Sree Gokulam Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a talk on the topic The Genetics of Hemoglobinopathies. Dr. Neeraj Sidharthan, Associate Professor, Department.of Oncology, AIMS discussed the topic Clinically Significant Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies. Dr. Sumithra N. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Established in 2002, presently Amrita School of Medicine, AIMS, Kochi, is a pioneer medical institution in India for higher education, patient care and research. MBBS degree awarded by the School was recognized in 2007 and Postgraduate Programs (MD/MS) was started in 2008. Since then, there was a tremendous thrust in academic activities and presently the school conducts 20 MD, 4 MS, 9 DM and 7 M.Ch. and 13 PG Diploma programs with an annual intake of 129 students. With the growing global demand for technical experts in medical management, we also conduct M.Sc. and B.Sc. programs in various allied health sciences subjects including the Rehabilitation Council of India approved BASLP program.

The School is always in the forefront in introducing the internationally acclaimed state of the art infrastructure facilities and highly qualified and experienced teachers and clinicians for education and management of various health related disorders. In consonance with our vision and mission of establishing and maintaining an affordable, not-for-profit centre of health care excellence, the daily turnover of patients now touched to an incredible figure of approximately 3200 outpatients and more than 135 admissions per day.

As a charitable institution, in addition to the regular medical camps in urban, rural and tribal areas, the Amrita Family - a dedicated team of faculty, students, staff and ashramites are always in the forefront in extending medical aid in distress situations like tsunami, earthquake, floods with a spirit of compassion to all. Students’ participation in health related value added programs like yoga & meditation, anti-tobacco movement, blood donation and organ donation drive, public awareness programs and environmental aspects are praiseworthy.
