Abstract : As the global challenge for sustainable transportation rises, electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising solution to combat the adverse effects of conventional Internal Combustion (IC) engine vehicles on the environment. In India, the acceptance of EVs has been expanding momentum, driven by government plans, technological advancements, and raising environmental awareness. However, misconceptions persist regarding the complete ecological footprint of EVs. This paper aims to explore the prevalent misconceptions related to electric vehicles in India, focusing on two primary aspects: emissions and challenges. The study examines the lifecycle emissions, encompassing battery production, electricity generation, and disposal, to assess their environmental benefits comprehensively. Additionally, the research identifies challenges hindering EV adoption in India, including charging infrastructure, upfront costs, and range anxiety. The research draws on a combination of literature review, data analysis, and case studies to fully understand the current electric vehicle misconceptions and challenges in India. The study finds that with only 23% of India’s electricity from renewables, the rapid growth of EVs could increase emissions and up to 90% improper battery recycling and disposal further exacerbating environmental harm. By shedding light on misconceptions and challenges, this study aims to inform policymakers and stakeholders, facilitating a faster transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation in India.
