Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham addresses student food insecurity through coordinated campus programmes launched and expanded in 2024, directly supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). These initiatives ensure equitable access to nutritious food for all students, regardless of socioeconomic status.
Formed in 2024, Amrita’s Taskforce systematically surveys students across campuses to identify those struggling with regular food access. Based on need assessments, the taskforce coordinates emergency meal coupons, subsidized dining hall passes, and partners with hostel committees to discreetly distribute food packets to affected students.
Under the university’s sustainable campus programme, “Zero Hunger” drives were implemented in 2024 to reduce food waste and redirect surplus prepared meals from dining halls to students in need. A confidential sign-up system enables any student experiencing short-term or chronic food insecurity to receive meal support, with faculty and student volunteers ensuring equity and privacy.
In 2024, university wellness counsellors led campus workshops on affordable nutrition, meal planning, and avenues for seeking help. Digital resources and helplines for food-insecure students were disseminated widely through class groups and hostel apps, ensuring that support reaches those reluctant to self-identify in person.
