In 2024, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham reaffirmed its leadership in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6-“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”, through innovative water reuse and conservation practices. Sustainability remains a core operational principle, with over 80% of campus water being reused across all Amrita locations. This remarkable milestone reflects the institution’s unwavering alignment with the Chancellor’s vision for responsible and future-ready water stewardship.
This policy outlines the key strategies and implementation frameworks that ensure efficient, effective, and scalable water reuse across all Amrita campuses, demonstrating how technological innovation and ecological responsibility can co-exist to achieve long-term water security.
1. Harnessing Greywater
Amrita is committed to utilizing advanced greywater treatment systems to process wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry facilities. This treated greywater is repurposed for irrigation, toilet flushing, and cooling systems, significantly reducing our dependency on freshwater sources.
2. Rainwater Harvesting
Comprehensive rainwater harvesting systems capture water from rooftops and other surfaces, providing a reliable source for non-potable applications such as landscaping, cooling, and fire suppression. Groundwater recharge systems are also established to replenish local aquifers and maintain ecological stability.
3. Wastewater Recycling
Our state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants are operated to recycle water that meets stringent quality standards. This recycled water is utilized for critical non-potable purposes, including extensive irrigation and campus cooling systems.
4. Technological Advancements
Amrita continues to adopt cutting-edge filtration and treatment technologies to enhance water reuse efficiency. Real-time monitoring systems are implemented to track water reuse volumes and assess their direct contribution to reducing the overall water demand.
5. Stakeholder Engagement
Ongoing educational campaigns and training programs are conducted to raise awareness about sustainable water practices. These initiatives actively engage the Amrita community, fostering a culture of collective responsibility towards water conservation and reuse.
Through these strategic initiatives, Amrita meets a substantial portion of its water needs via reuse, setting a benchmark in sustainable resource management. The institution remains dedicated to scaling these efforts, integrating innovation and collaboration to address future water challenges while steadfastly following the Chancellor’s visionary leadership.
