Syllabus

Unit I

Drugs and Pharmaceuticals (14 hours)Drug discovery, design and development; Basic Retrosynthetic approach. Synthesis of the representative drugs of the following classes: analgesics agents, antipyretic agents, anti-inflammatory agents (Aspirin, paracetamol, lbuprofen); antibiotics (Chloramphenicol); antibacterial and antifungal agents (Sulphonamides; Sulphanethoxazol, Sulphacetamide, Trimethoprim); antiviral agents (Acyclovir), Central Nervous System agents (Phenobarbital, Diazepam),Cardiovascular (Glyceryl trinitrate), antilaprosy (Dapsone), HIV-AIDS related drugs (AZT- Zidovudine).

Unit II

Cosmetics and Perfumes (11 hours)A general study including preparation and uses of the following: Hair dye, hair spray, Shampoo, Sun-tan lotions, face powder, lipsticks, talcum powder, nail enamel, creams (cold, vanishing and shaving creams), antiperspirants and artificial flavours. Essential oils and their importance in cosmetic industries with reference to Eugenol, Geraniol, sandalwood oil, eucalyptus, rose oil, ?-phenyl ethyl alcohol, Jasmone, Civetone, Muscone.

Unit III

Pesticides (11 hours)General introduction to pesticides (natural and synthetic), benefits and adverse effects, changing concepts of pesticides, structure activity relationship, synthesis and technical manufacture and uses of representative pesticides in the following classes: Organochlorines (DDT, Gammexene,); Organophosphates (Malathion, Parathion ); Carbamates (Carbofuran and carbaryl); Quinones ( Chloranil) , Anilides (Alachlor and Butachlor).

Unit IV

Fermentation Industries (9 hours) Aerobic and anaerobic fermentation. Production of (i) Ethyl alcohol and citric acid, (ii) Antibiotics; Pencillin, Cephalosporin, Chloromycetin and Streptomycin, (iii) Lysine, Glutamic acid, Vitamine B2, Vitamine B12 and Vitamine C.

Objectives and Outcomes

OBJECTIVES: To provide the students fundamental idea about the manufacturing and characterization processes involved in natural product industry. To provide fundamental idea about the protocols involved in the synthesis of natural products such as drugs of desired properties.
