Cinerama, the National-Level Short Film Festival organised by Amrita’s VisCom, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mysuru Campus, is an event where stories come alive and young filmmakers find their voice. Cinerama celebrates the joy of storytelling and encourages budding filmmakers around the country to dream bigger, experiment boldly and tell stories that truly matter.

More than just a competition, Cinerama is about connection, connecting passion with opportunity, talent with mentorship and students with professionals from the film industry. It creates a friendly yet inspiring environment where learning, collaboration and meaningful conversations take centre stage.

Open Category

  1. Registration Fee – ₹800/- (inclusive of GST) per short film.
  2. A team or an individual may submit multiple short films; however, separate registration is mandatory for each entry.
  3. The maximum duration of the short film must not exceed 40 minutes (inclusive of the Title Card and end credits).
  4. Spot registrations will not be entertained under any circumstances.
  5. Only short films produced after January 1st, 2025, are eligible for Cinerama 2026.
  6. The short film may be in English or any Indian language. English subtitles are mandatory for all non-English films provided in a properly formatted SRT file.
  7. Story should be original. Films with the copyrighted content, obscene scenes, vulgarity and dialogues will be disqualified.
  8. Participants must report to the Reception Desk on the day of the event and furnish their valid ID Card.
  9. Nominees shortlisted for the final round will be informed in advance and must be physically present at the Amrita Mysuru Campus for the Short Film Festival. In case of unavailability, awardees must ensure that the award is collected in person by an authorized representative with valid proof. Awards will not be couriered under any circumstances.
  10. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to amend the rules if the situation demands. 
  11. The decision of the judges shall be final and binding.
  12. The Management will not be responsible for any loss of personal belongings or valuables.
  13. The Registration Form will be considered complete only after full payment is made and the proof of payment is attached.

Amrita 60 Hour Filmmaking Challenge

Challenge Timeline
  • The filmmaking period commences from April 2nd, 7:30 PM (IST) and concludes on April 5th, 7:30 AM (IST).
  • Teams are advised to allocate 58 hours for production and 2 hours for uploading within the 60-hour window.
  • An extension of up to 2 hours will be granted only in case of genuine technical issues, subject to deduction for delayed submission – decided by the organisers
Submission Guidelines
  • Films must be submitted via the official upload link shared with the Team Leader at the commencement of the challenge.
  • The entire film must be shot strictly within the designated 60-hour period. Proof must be furnished upon request.
  • Duration must be a minimum of 4 minutes and a maximum of 6 minutes, excluding the end credits. End credits must not exceed 60 seconds and are separate from the maximum film duration.
  • Final submission must be in MP4/MOV/MPEG-4 format, 1080p resolution, below 2 GB, and named using the assigned Creator ID.
  • Teams must retain original footage and project files for a minimum of three years for potential broadcast or verification purposes. 
  • The final output of the 60-Hour must not be published/ exhibited on any platform (social media or otherwise) until the results are declared.
Creative Requirements
  • The theme and one compulsory element will be revealed on the official ‘Amrita Mysuru’ Instagram page and communicated to the registered Team Leader via email and SMS/WhatsApp at the start of the challenge.
  • Teams may choose one genre from the four provided options along with the announced theme.
  • The announced theme must be incorporated meaningfully within the narrative.
  • English or any Indian language. English subtitles are mandatory for all non-English films, provided in a properly formatted SRT file.
  • All team members must ensure to contribute equally to the project. Any internal dispute must be sorted out within the team.
  • No stock footage or pre-existing video content is permitted. Photographs may be used only if the team holds usage rights.
  • Teams must use the official Cinerama Opening Slide (Title Slate) at the beginning of the film.
  • Teams must upload at least one Behind-the-Scenes (BTS) post on Instagram tagging ‘Amrita Mysuru’ and using the hashtag #cinerama2026.
Technical Specifications
  • Films may be shot using a DSLR, professional cinema camera or a mobile device capable of minimum 1080p recording.
  • Editing must be carried out on a laptop.
  • Collaboration with local composers and musicians is encouraged. Copyrighted music may be used only up to 15 seconds with proper credits.
Ethical & Legal Compliance
  • The story must not violate personal rights, religious sentiments, privacy or promote violence or derogatory content.
  • Teams must sign and submit the Creator’s Agreement online, shared along with the theme announcement.
  • Cinerama reserves the right to amend rules before the commencement of the filmmaking period if necessary.
  • Cinerama and the jury reserve the right to disqualify any film found inappropriate or non-compliant.

FAQs

Is there a registration fee?

The registration fee for each team is Rs.500/-. Fees should be paid online to confirm your team participation. You will receive an email with your Creator ID upon confirmation.

What is the evaluation criteria?

Your film will be evaluated based on the following criteria – Visual appeal, story and narrative flow, characters and on-screen performances, adherence to the theme and adherence to the genre.

Are Special Effects allowed?

Yes, you can include special effects. However, no stock footage may be used for this. Inbuilt plugins and effects of software may be used.

What will be the duration of the films?

The films are to be made between 4 to 6 minutes. This is because, for a good film produced in this challenge, 4 to 6 minutes is an ideal duration.

Does the maximum length of the film include end credits?

No, the end credits are not included in the duration of your film. The end credits can be a maximum of 60 seconds.

Can I modify the film after the challenge?

Of course, you can modify the film post the challenge, but keeping the following in the end credits – ‘This film was conceptualized for Cinerama 2026’

How do I upload my film faster?

We would recommend you render the film at 1080p for faster upload results. Also, keeping the file size below 1 GB would make it faster.

Can I submit multiple entries?

Yes, but with a new registration. One entry per registration will only be allowed.

What can be the team size?

The team can have a minimum of 1 person and a maximum 5 people. You can have more members to act and help, but only the five registered people will be considered for the certificates and awards.

What about our film after the Challenge?

You can use your film in various ways, only to keep in mind that the film bears the credit “This film was made for Amrita 60 hour Filmmaking challenge” in its title and end credits. For more details, read the team leader’s agreement sent to your team leader at the beginning of the 60 Hour Filmmaking Challenge.

Is any footage allowed in the end credits?

Yes, but the narration of your story should end before it.

How do you judge so many films?

Each film, according to its category of participation, is sent to three different pre-juries for evaluation, consisting of two people each. The cumulative score from the pre-juries is used to prepare a list of merit. The top 30 films from each category are sent to the final jury for viewing and ranking.

Can I use a stock photo?

If you own the rights to the photo, you can use it.

Is animation allowed?

No, animation in any form is not allowed in the film.

. Can we include a title animation or our company logo in the film?

Yes, you can. Provided they are only on screen for less than 10 seconds.

What should be the shooting quality, aspect ratio and sound for the film?

The final output should be a MOV or MPEG4 file with a resolution of 1080p. The aspect ratio should be 16:9. The sound has to be stereo.

What language must my film be in? Do I need to add subtitles?

Your film can be in any language. Subtitles are compulsory for all films. You can refer to rules for more specific details about subtitles

Should my story revolve around or be based on the compulsory element?

No. Compulsory element should be a part of your film, but it should not necessarily be the central part of it. For e.g. – Compulsory element is a comic book so you can include it by showing how it is lying around somewhere in the frame, or how a character is reading it.

What is the Creator’s Agreement?

Each team leader must sign an agreement, which is legally binding. The agreement will help protect your rights as a creator and our rights as a platform. This agreement will be provided to the team leader at the beginning of the challenge through email along with the theme. Any team leader not submitting the same will be disqualified along with the team

Can my film have no dialogues?

Yes, your film can have no dialogues and only music. You will have to explain the mood of the scenes in your subtitles.

Do I need a ‘Location Release’ to shoot on public property?

No, you need a location release only on a privately held property. But we strongly recommend taking permits wherever necessary in the case of public property.

Where do I upload the film?

Link to upload your film will be sent to the team leader at the beginning of the challenge along with the theme.

Can I use mobile to upload my film?

We highly advise you to use a laptop to upload your film. Mobile connections tend to be inconsistent, leading to delays. Use of a high-speed broadband is definitely a plus!

Is the judging process transparent?

Being one of the leading festivals in the continent, we at Cinerama strive hard to make sure that justice is done to every film submitted. To make sure we do not miss out on any films, the Cinerama team also watches these films simultaneously and raises an issue internally if any flaws or biases are found in the process. We do not entertain any requests for paid awards, neither have in the past and nor will in the future, to keep the spirit of competition alive.
