Dr. David Nicol 

Dr. David Nicol joined WMG at the University of Warwick as Innovation Manager in energy efficiency and sustainability in early 2019, following a decade of product development experience in the manufacturing and automotive sectors. 

As part of WMG’s SME Team within the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, he leads government-supported energy reduction and efficiency initiatives for energy-intensive UK manufacturers. 

Prior to joining Warwick, Dr. Nicol completed a full-time EngD under CEO David Greenwood at Catapult, specialising in battery manufacturing and energy systems research from 2019 to 2023. His doctoral work encompassed nondestructive testing processes for batteries and design of sustainable energy storage technologies. 

In his current role, he also serves as International Research Collaboration Development lead, working directly with WMG’s Deans and research leadership to expand global sustainable energy research, particularly in Southeast Asia. There, he has spearheaded projects on smart microgrids and off-grid electrical infrastructure in remote environments. 

Dr. Nicol’s expertise spans project management, energy auditing, data science, and operational efficiency. He applies these skills to delivering tangible energy savings in manufacturing and developing innovative infrastructure models internationally.
