Director & Wilson Chair of Hazard and Risk in the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience, Durham University
Prof. Bruce Malamud is the Wilson Chair of Hazard and Risk and Executive Director of the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University, where he is also affiliated with the Department of Geography. Since joining Durham in March 2023, he has continued his globally recognized research on multi-hazard interrelationships and individual hazards such as landslides, earthquakes, floods, and wildfires.
His work spans mathematical modeling, time-series analysis, and the role of anthropogenic processes in shaping hazard risk. He is particularly engaged in integrating data and complexity science with hazard communication and visualization.
Prior to Durham, Prof. Malamud served over two decades at King’s College London, where he advanced from Lecturer to Professor of Natural & Environmental Hazards. He earned a BA in Physics from Reed College, followed by service in the U.S. Peace Corps in Niger. He later worked at the Stanford Linear Accelerator and earned a PhD in Geophysics/Stratigraphy from Cornell University. He was also a Fulbright Fellow in Argentina.
Prof. Malamud has held notable leadership roles, including President of the Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union (2007–2011), and Programme Chair for the EGU General Assembly. He is Executive Editor of Natural Hazards & Earth System Sciences and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, cited more than 10,000 times.
