Talk Title: Food-grade Protein Biopolymer Based Nanocarriers For Drug Delivery Applications
Prof. Om Perumal is the Associate Vice President for Research and Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of New Mexico. He oversees the research operations and manage the award lifecycle for the UNM research enterprise, which includes over 1,900 awards and an annual research expenditure of $380 million. Dr. Perumal also served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions at South Dakota State University (SDSU). He has a B.S. degree in Pharmacy, an M.S. degree in Pharmaceutics, and a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics (NIPER). He completed his post-doctoral training at the University of Kentucky and Wayne State University. He has over 20 years of teaching and research experience in pharmaceutics and drug delivery. He has also served as the Department Head for Pharmaceutical Sciences and Director for two research centers at SDSU. Dr. Perumal has also served as graduate program coordinator at SDSU and was involved in growing the PhD program in pharmaceutical sciences and developing a new M.S. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Perumal’s research focuses on drug delivery at the interface of biological and material sciences using a disease, drug and estimation (3D) framework. His group has developed delivery systems for oral, transdermal, and parenteral drug administration and licensed several new drug delivery technologies. Dr. Perumal has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters, and 100 presentations in national and international meetings. Dr. Perumal has mentored over 30 undergraduate/professional/graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and visiting faculty. He served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomedical Technology (2011-17). Dr. Perumal is the recipient of the Patricia Walker Skin Cancer Research Award from the Skin Cancer Foundation, the F.O. Butler Award for excellence in research, and the Intellectual Property & Commercialization award from SDSU. He served as the Chair of the Pharmaceutics Section and Chair-elect for the graduate education section in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).
