FRRO Registration Process for International Students/ Faculties

 

Introduction

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is a government office responsible for registering foreign nationals who are staying in India for more than 180 days. This registration is mandatory for all foreign nationals, with the exception of nationals of Burma and Nepal. They are required to register themselves with a Registration Officer within 14 days of arriving in India.

For Students

Process for International Students

The process for FRRO registration for international students is as follows:

  • C form registration: This must be completed within 24 hours of arrival in India.
  • S form registration: This must be completed within 14 days of arrival in India.
  • FRRO registration: This must be completed within 14 days of arrival in India, else the student will be fined (Exception Nationals of Bhutan, Nepal  and OCI holders)

Note: In every three months the institution must update the academic performance of the student in ‘S’ form portal and the ‘S’ form must be exited after course completion.

Documents Required for FRRO Registration

The following documents are required for FRRO registration:

  • C form
  • S form
  • Bonafide certificate
  • Bonafide letter
  • Undertaking letter (in some cases)
  • Passport copy
  • Visa copy
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Scholarship letter or financial proof

Important Notes

  • If a student leaves the campus for more than 24 hours, their C form must be exited and re-entered upon their return.
  • The responsibility for C form entry lies with both the student and the institution.
  • Students must come only on a student visa.

Student Visa Types

S1: For higher studies (UG, PG)
S2: School students
S3: Short-term courses (internship, summer program)
S5: Research visa (PhD.)
S6: Internship

  • If a student changes their Program, they must apply for a program change with FRRO and pay a fee of Rs:6500. The fee may vary depending on the country. The mentioned charge is valid for both campus and institution changes.
  • Students can also change their Visa entry type from single entry to Multiple/ Triple/ Double entry.

Documents Needed for Institution Change

  • NOC from the department.
  • Transfer letter from the department

The student is required to re-register under FRRO in the new jurisdiction and submit a transfer application in the existing FRRO jurisdiction.

The campus change follows the same procedure.

Documents Needed for Visa/Registration  Renewal

Every international student needs to renew his/her visa and Registration before its expiry. 

The following documents are required for visa/registration  renewal in India:

  • Passport copy
  • Visa copy
  • Passport size photograph
  • C form
  • S form
  • Bonafide certificate
  • Bonafide letter
  • Undertaking letter (in some cases)

*Make sure to begin the renewal procedure at least one month prior

Note: As per our Visa conditions, a student who comes under students Visa shall not indulge in any other activities in India except studying.

Process for International Faculties

The process for FRRO registration for international faculties are as follows:

  • C form registration: This must be completed within 24 hours of arrival in India.
  • FRRO registration: This must be completed within 14 days of arrival in India (Exception Nationals of Bhutan, Nepal and OCI holders)

Employer’s Visa:

  • E1- Employees working for a salary of $25,000 annually.
  • E3/ E4– Employees with voluntary employment visas whose monthly wage must be less than 25,000 INR)

Notes: Foreign professors can visit the university under Business visa/Tourist Visa
Professors visiting university for Seminars, signing MoU or attending Symposium should come under business visa

Renewal of Visa/Registration

Make sure to begin the renewal procedure at least one month prior.

Please keep a Google document with information on foreign nationals that clearly states the dates when their registration and visas expire. This can enable you to begin the renewal procedure beforehand.

Documents Needed for Visa Renewal

The following documents are required for visa renewal in India:

  • Passport copy
  • Visa copy
  • Passport size photograph
  • Renewed contract letter.
  • C form
  • Bonafide letter
  • Undertaking letter
  • ITR – Income tax returns latest 
Rules for OCI

As per the policy of the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) all the OCI/PIO card holders who desire to perform research (at University or in any other organizations) in India are required to
apply and receive special permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Documents Required for Student or Researcher

  1. Passport copy
  2. OCI card copy
  3. C form (latest)
  4. Synopsis of the Research (250 – 500 words)
  5. Start Date and expected end date of the research.
  6. Head of the Department/ Guide/ Supervisor details (Name, Designation, Center/ Department,Campus, email address)
  • OCI students need not to do C form, S form or FRRO registration but in some states in India FRRO prefers to treat them as international and in such cases, it is mandatory for all FRRO processes for them.
