AMMACHI Labs Marks World Fisheries Day with Community-Focused Ocean Sustainability Activities in Tamil Nadu

To commemorate World Fisheries Day, observed globally to promote sustainable fisheries and safeguard marine ecosystems, members of the AMMACHI Labs Ocean Farming team organized and participated in a series of impactful community programs across multiple coastal villages in Tamil Nadu.

Awareness Sessions in Thondi, Solaikudi & Sambai

The team conducted interactive awareness sessions highlighting:

  • The importance of sustainable fishing practices
  • Marine conservation and ecosystem protection
  • Long-term livelihood benefits for coastal communities

Each session concluded with a community pledge reaffirming their commitment to protecting marine resources for future generations.

Showcasing Seaweed Products at Fisheries Department Event

At the World Fisheries Day celebration hosted by the Thangachimadam Panchayat Fisheries Department, AMMACHI Labs—along with women from local seaweed cultivation groups—exhibited a range of seaweed-based products, including soaps and pickles.
The stall garnered significant community interest, demonstrating the potential of seaweed-based microenterprises in boosting women-led, sustainable coastal livelihoods.

Seagrass Restoration Activity in Thiruppalkudi

A hands-on seagrass restoration initiative was conducted using cocopeat pots to plant locally occurring Halophila and Cymodocea species. Local women actively participated, placing the planted cocopeat pots in the seabed to encourage natural rooting.

The activity underscored the importance of seagrass meadows, which play a vital role in supporting fish populations, enhancing marine biodiversity, and sustaining the livelihoods of fishing communities.
