For over a year, Muskan Chhatwal, a designer from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), has been mentoring women artisans at The WE Project Store, helping them develop both technical and creative expertise to craft garments of international quality.
Recently, Muskan collaborated with Suma Lakshmi, a graduate of the Amrita Vishwakarma tailoring program, as Suma transitioned to using a power sewing machine—a gift from her husband, inspired by her enthusiasm and dedication after completing the course. Facilitating communication and coordination throughout this process was Gayathry Srinivasan, Business Development and Artisan Outreach lead at The WE Project Store.
Their ongoing collaboration with TULA, a sustainable fashion label founded by Karri Smisek (Anantashri) from Australia, demonstrates how purpose-driven design partnerships can empower communities while creating meaningful impact.
When skills meet purpose, empowerment becomes not just an initiative, but a sustainable movement.
