Abstract : Integrating a microgrid has both positive and negative effects on the local distribution network. One of the challenging combinatorial optimization problems involves deciding where a microgrid should be situated inside a distribution system. Improper location of a microgrid on the utility side might result in power flowing in the opposite direction, which can have unfavorable effects, particularly during times of peak utility demand. Utility companies may be reluctant to adopt microgrids if they already have issues with excessive power loss and poor voltage profiles. This paper presents an agent-based modeling pathway to find the optimum location of a microgrid using the DC Optimal Power Flow method. A 30-bus system is considered for the analysis and demonstration for optimally locating the Micro Grid (MG) for the efficient day-ahead market operation to maximize the Generating Company (GenCo) profit. This work also interprets the best microgrid placement scenario which prompts the participation of even the highest cost generator.
