Self-esteem and adolescents’ perception regarding maternal parenting style

Abstract : The present study investigated the correlation between self-esteem and adolescent’s perception regarding maternal parenting style. Objective: The main aim of the study to find the correlation between self-esteem and perception of adolescents regarding maternal parenting style. Methodology: Non experimental correlational survey design was employed. The study was carried out in St.Philomina’s Public School and Junior College, Elanji, Ernakulam. A total of 180 adolescents were selected using convenience sampling technique. The tools used for the study were scale of parenting style and Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale. Results: The present study with regard to self-esteem of adolescents showed that majority, 124 (68.9%) of adolescents had moderate self-esteem, 39 (21.7%) had high self-esteem and 17 (9.4%) had low self-esteem. The maternal parenting style as perceived by adolescents showed that 56 (31.2%) of adolescents perceived their mother followed authoritative parenting style, 52 (28.8%) as neglectful parenting style, 40 (22.2%) perceived as permissive parenting style and 32 (17.8%) of adolescents perceived their mother followed authoritarian parenting style. The correlation between self-esteem and maternal parenting style as perceived by adolescents showed that there is a positive correlation between self-esteem and authoritative parenting style was found as r = 0.27 with p = 0.04. Conclusion: Adolescents and parents both go through a transition period, where the parents need to play a vital role to make this transition period a comfortable one for their teen. It is observed that adolescents’ self-esteem is high if they have good relationships with their parents.
