Abstract : Technology assessment at different stages of a ‘technology development cycle’ is critical for successful technology development and deployment. One of the useful frame works for technology assessment is the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale. This paper draws attention to the evolution of this scale, making an implicit argument that revisiting the technologies developed in India through a suitably modified TRL scale can provide a useful direction for technology development and in translation/commercialization. It highlights the CSIR TRL assessment to show how the scale is developed in actual practice. It concludes with the challenges that need to be addressed while implementing this scale
