AMMACHI Labs, in collaboration with IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section SIGHT and IEEE EdSoc Kerala Chapter, organized an offline coding camp for pre-university students (Classes 7 to 10) at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, from 23/05/2023 to 28/05/2023, funded by IEEE TryEngineering for $2000 named “STEAM for Social Good.” The event equipped 49 students (which include 22 girls) with coding skills while fostering an understanding of sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The classes were conducted by Prof. Gayathri Manikutty. Throughout the camp, students were taught coding using BBC Micro:bit and Kittenbot platforms, enabling them to create innovative projects and explore the possibilities of these technologies. Alongside coding skills, the participants gained valuable insights into sustainability and UNSDGs, emphasizing the importance of technology in addressing global challenges. Interactive discussions, hands-on coding sessions, and group projects provided students with a well-rounded learning experience.
On the final day of the event, a Makeathon was conducted, encouraging students to apply their coding skills and knowledge of sustainability to develop creative solutions based on the UNSDGs. This Makeathon fostered problem-solving abilities and creative thinking in the children, empowering them to become active contributors to solving real-world challenges. “STEAM for Social Good” successfully instilled a passion for coding, sustainability, and social impact in the young minds, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
