AMMACHI Labs has initiated a series of field assessments across Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, marking a significant step toward expanding its proven ocean farming and women-led seaweed cultivation initiatives beyond Tamil Nadu. The four-day exploratory visit aimed to evaluate the region’s potential for establishing sustainable, climate-resilient livelihood opportunities for coastal communities—especially women.
During the visit, the AMMACHI Labs team engaged with a diverse group of stakeholders, including coastal communities in Karwar and Mudga, marine biologists from Karnataka University, officials from Aajeevika – National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), Fisheries Department representatives, and the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat. These discussions focused on identifying suitable coastal sites, understanding the local marine ecosystem, and evaluating interest among women’s Self Help Groups (SHGs) in adopting seaweed cultivation.
Officials and community members expressed strong support for the initiative, highlighting the growing interest in introducing seaweed-based livelihood programs to women in the region. Conversations also explored opportunities for value-added products, training programs, and establishing market linkages that would ensure long-term economic sustainability.
The field visit sets the groundwork for potential pilot sites and future partnerships aimed at advancing ocean-based livelihood models in Karnataka. By fostering collaboration among academic, governmental, and community stakeholders, the initiative aligns closely with global efforts to build resilient coastal economies.
