Members of AMMACHI Labs and the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality actively participated in S.E.A.W.E.E.D.S. 2026 – International Symposium on Seaweeds, an international gathering that brought together policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and development organizations to explore the expanding role of seaweed in marine biotechnology, climate solutions, and the Blue Economy.
During the symposium held in Kochi, the AMMACHI Labs team hosted an exhibition booth presenting the “Blue is the New Pink” model, which highlights women-led seaweed cultivation initiatives and the development of value-added seaweed products. The display featured innovative products such as seaweed pickles and seaweed-based soaps produced by women entrepreneurs from Rameswaram.
The exhibition booth attracted significant attention from policymakers, researchers, donors, and industry stakeholders interested in sustainable coastal livelihoods and the potential for scaling women-led seaweed enterprises. Among the notable visitors was George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, India, who visited the stall and interacted with the team about the initiatives being implemented to empower coastal communities.
Seaweed-based products made by women from Ramanathapuram district were also made available at the exhibition, with all proceeds from the sales going directly to the women entrepreneurs. The initiative demonstrated how community-driven enterprises can create sustainable income opportunities while promoting environmentally friendly practices.
During the inaugural ceremony, Minister George Kurian emphasized the transformative potential of seaweed cultivation, noting that in some cases women involved in seaweed farming have increased their annual incomes from approximately ₹3,000 to nearly ₹3 lakh. Discussions during the symposium also highlighted the expansion of seaweed parks, government support through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, and efforts to develop a national seaweed roadmap by 2027.
Events such as S.E.A.W.E.E.D.S. 2026 continue to strengthen collaboration among governments, researchers, and community organizations, advancing climate solutions, sustainable coastal livelihoods, and the rapidly growing Blue Economy.
