The Amrita Centre for Allied Health Sciences organized a one-day awareness program in observance of World Alzheimer’s Day. The event aimed to raise awareness on Alzheimer’s disease, highlight its impact on individuals and families, and encourage early recognition and compassionate care.
The program was inaugurated by Prof. M.V. Thampi, Chief Program Administrator, Amrita Centre for Allied Health Sciences, who stressed the importance of collective efforts in addressing the growing burden of Alzheimer’s disease in society.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. A. Anand Kumar, Vice Principal & Professor of Neurology, Amrita School of Medicine, Kochi, on “Memory Impairment as a Lifestyle Problem.” This was followed by an insightful talk titled “When Memories Fade: Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease” by Ms. Sreekala C, Assistant Professor, Amrita Centre for Allied Health Sciences, emphasizing the medical and emotional challenges faced by patients and caregivers.
Highlights of the event included, cultural and creative events, where students actively participated in a skit competition themed “Caring with Love: Supporting a Person with Memory Loss.” This was followed by a lively Memory Game, where students showcased their skills in recall and retention.
The afternoon witnessed vibrant cultural performances, including dances and musical renditions by student groups and solo performers, spreading awareness through art. A Poster Competition on the theme “Know Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Awareness, Lifelong Care” allowed students to creatively convey messages of awareness and care. An Instagram Reels Competition on the theme “Remembering Matters” encouraged short, impactful digital content to reach wider audiences.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony led by Prasad V G, Assistant Professor and Program Coordinator, ACAHS, and Member of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, who congratulated participants for their innovative contributions in raising awareness.
Through academic sessions, competitions, and cultural performances, the program successfully combined knowledge with creativity to sensitize students and the public about Alzheimer’s disease. The initiative reflected Amrita Centre for Allied Health Sciences’ commitment to advancing healthcare education and creating a compassionate community that supports individuals with memory loss and their families.
