Amrita Eye Care Champions Project Launched at MMUST to Combat Preventable Blindness

The Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE), in collaboration with Amrita Centre Kenya and Vision Without Borders, officially launched the Amrita Eye Care Champions Project at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).

As part of the initiative, 32 fifth-year Optometry students participated in an intensive three-day Train the Trainers (TTT) program designed to prepare them to equip village health promoters with essential skills and knowledge to fight preventable blindness.

The training was powered by AMMACHI Labs’ Ample App, a digital platform that offers interactive modules and hands-on practice tools, ensuring that students and community health promoters receive effective, scalable, and technology-driven learning support.

The MMUST Dean and Department Heads expressed their appreciation for this partnership and emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration. They highlighted that initiatives like this not only enhance professional training but also strengthen community health systems in rural areas.

By merging education, innovation, and community empowerment, the project aspires to significantly reduce preventable blindness across Kenya.
