Amrita Hospital, Kochi, Hosts Gender Sensitisation Workshops on International Women’s Day

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality (CWEGE) organized a series of engaging gender sensitisation workshops at the Amrita School of Nursing, Amrita Hospital, Kochi. The sessions aimed to promote a deeper understanding of gender equality and encourage participants to reflect on societal norms and personal beliefs.

Key discussions focused on the distinction between gender and sex, helping participants recognize the difference between biological attributes and socially constructed roles. Through interactive discussions and reflective exercises, students gained valuable insights and, by the end of the session, were able to:

  • Distinguish between Gender and Sex
  • Understand the negative impact of assigning roles solely based on gender
  • Identify areas in society and personal life that require re-evaluation to promote equality

The workshop concluded with a powerful message — that no skill, profession, or role belongs to a single gender. With the right training, encouragement, and determination, anyone can learn and excel in any field.

A highlight of the session was the introduction of the concept DA DA DA – Daya, Danam, Damam:

  • Daya – Compassion
  • Danam – Charity or Generosity
  • Damam – Self-restraint

Students were encouraged to reflect on these Indian values and identify three areas in their lives where they could apply Daya, Danam, and Damam to foster a more gender-harmonious society.

Additionally, a special session was organized for the nursing staff of Amrita Hospital, Kochi, on March 11th, focusing on building gender harmony through Indian frameworks and principles. The workshop was facilitated by Radhika Shetty from CWEGE, assisted by Master of Social Work students, who played an active role in coordinating the event.

These initiatives reaffirm Amrita Hospital’s and CWEGE’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, equality, and compassion across all sectors of education and healthcare.
