Two-Day Workshop on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) : Patent Search and Drafting

A two-day workshop on ‘Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Patent Search and Drafting’ was successfully conducted by Amrita School of Pharmacy on 14th and 15th January 2026. The workshop witnessed the enthusiastic participation of around 40 participants, including faculty members and research scholars. The sessions were led by the resource person Dr. Yoganjaneyulu Kasetti, Patent Attorney, K S Partners, Bengaluru, who shared his extensive expertise in patent law, patent searching, and drafting practices. This workshop effectively enhanced participants’ understanding of fundamentals of IPR and patents, patent search strategies and prior art analysis, details about drafting patent specifications and claims.
The workshop commenced with prayer song setting a positive tone for the day, followed by welcome address by Dr. Jaya Thomas, Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Amrita School of Pharmacy. Dr. Sabitha M., Principal, Amrita School of Pharmacy delivered the inaugural address, highlighting the importance of intellectual property protection in academic research and innovation. The ceremonial lamp lighting was performed by the dignitaries, symbolizing illumination of knowledge.
The first day of the workshop focused on the fundamentals of intellectual property rights and patent searches. The morning session covered an introduction to Intellectual Property Rights, an overview of patents and copyrights, and the importance of IPR in research and innovation. Participants were introduced to the basic concepts and legal framework governing intellectual property, followed by an interactive discussion that encouraged questions and knowledge sharing.
The afternoon session focused on types of patent searches and the various methods and tools used for patent searching. The session also included a hands-on exercise in which participants conducted prior art searches for given ideas or inventions. The day concluded with a discussion on search outcomes and interpretation of results, enabling participants to better understand the concepts of novelty and patentability.
The second day of the workshop was dedicated to patent drafting and practical understanding of patent documentation. The morning session focused on the structure of a patent specification, including its essential components, and provided detailed insights into patent claims, their types, scope, and importance. The session helped participants understand how research ideas are systematically converted into legally sound patent documents.
The afternoon session included interactive discussions and one-to-one interactions between the participants and the resource person, where participants had the opportunity to clarify their doubts and discuss the patentability and potential scope of their own research work and innovations. Guidance was provided on documenting ideas and preparing invention disclosure forms, enabling participants to better understand the practical aspects and possibilities of patenting their work.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory session followed by feedback from participants who expressed high satisfaction with the clarity, practical orientation, and relevance of the sessions. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Manish Kumar Jeengar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Amrita School of Pharmacy, acknowledging the resource person, organizers, and participants for the successful conduct of the program.
