Abstract :

Dietary supplementation is often required in liver disease because the liver has a role in nutrient metabolism, and liver dysfunction can pose several potential challenges. Impaired protein synthesis, malnutrition from hypercatabolic status, decreased nutrient absorption, decreased caloric intake, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and so on are some of the reasons for malnutrition. Hence, detailed nutrition assessments are crucial in all types of liver diseases. This chapter discusses the dietary requirements of patients with cirrhosis of the liver, end-stage liver disease (ESLD), liver transplant, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and alcoholic steatohepatitis. A stage-dependent gradual impairment of lipid, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism accompanied by a deficit of trace elements, protein, and hepatic glycogen is anticipated in these patients. Patients on oral nutrition may have protein and micronutrient deficiencies and need a low-sodium diet. Severe cases need enteral or parenteral nutrition. Probiotics and synbiotics are advantageous in managing the recurrent septic episodes that coincide with liver decompensation. The customized diets for various HCC stages are also specified. Treating the side effects of cancer treatment with diet and the vital role of antioxidants and phytochemicals in HCC prevention give the readers quite new information.
