About

The Mano Layam Centre for Wellbeing, established under the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, is a pioneering initiative dedicated to nurturing holistic wellbeing across the university community. Grounded in the ethos of Education for Life and guided by Dean Dr. Bhavani Rao, the Centre integrates scientific insights with spiritual wisdom to cultivate resilience, balance, and purpose among students, faculty, and staff. Operating across Amritapuri and Arasampalayam campuses, the Centre provides a comprehensive ecosystem of services, including confidential counselling, crisis intervention, group therapy, and peer support initiatives. Alongside clinical services, the Centre spearheads training in Emotional and Psychological First Aid, capacity-building programs for faculty and staff, and wellbeing workshops tailored to the academic context. The Centre’s structure ensures robust governance, clinical excellence, training and research integration, and efficient administrative and digital support. It also emphasizes outreach through stigma-reduction campaigns, community events, and the creation of a Digital Wellbeing Hub. A strong monitoring and evaluation framework ensures accountability and continuous improvement, with periodic reporting to the Dean and university administration. By creating a compassionate, inclusive, and safe environment, the Mano Layam Centre for Wellbeing seeks to transform the campus into a space where mental, emotional, and spiritual health are prioritized as the foundation for academic excellence, personal growth, and societal contribution

Introduction

The mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of students and faculty is central to the university’s vision of holistic education. In alignment with this vision, the Mano Layam Centre for Wellbeing has been established under the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences to provide structured, accessible, and compassionate support systems within the university environment. The Centre operates under the direct oversight of Dean Dr. Bhavani Rao, with functional units across Amritapuri and Arasampalayam campuses. It represents a multi-dimensional approach to wellbeing—combining clinical services, psychoeducation, research, and community engagement. By embedding resilience-building programs and capacity-development initiatives, the Centre ensures that both preventive and responsive measures are in place to address the complex challenges faced by today’s academic community. The introduction of Mano Layam acknowledges the increasing demand for accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services in higher education. With a structure that balances governance, clinical excellence, research integration, and administrative efficiency, the Centre is positioned to become a model of innovation and compassion. Its work is not confined to therapy and crisis intervention alone, but also extends to empowering individuals through self-awareness, mindfulness, and resilience practices—anchored in both scientific evidence and the university’s deep-rooted spiritual ethos.
