Bio

Dr. Vidhya Balasubramanian currently serves as Principal and Professor at School of Computing, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore. She has experience in large scale spatial temporal data management and customized multimedia information retrieval. As a member of the Distributed Systems Middleware group in University of California, Irvine, USA, she worked on user-based multimedia content adaptation for distance learning. She has worked on building large simulation platforms for disaster response in the ITR-Rescue project, part of California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). She worked on scalable multi-geography path planning algorithms in the context of designing integrated disaster response simulation test beds. Her current areas of interests are spatial and temporal data management, Pervasive Systems and Cyber-Physical Systems. Her experience working on large systems has given her rich experience in large scale data management and scalable algorithms. She recently has been developing plug and play configurable frameworks for Indoor Information Systems, and Smart Hospitals. As part of these frameworks she is developing novel indoor localization solutions, ambient intelligence for event detection in indoor spaces, real-time querying system for moving objects in indoor spaces, and distributed event detection and querying over indoor data. These projects have been funded by Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India. She is currently coordinating a multi-disciplinary effort at Amrita to develop large-scale cyber-physical systems.
