Abstract : Chitosan, a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer obtained from chitin, has therapeutic properties that attract it more to drug supplies. Chitosan can be fabricated into various forms such as nanoparticles, microparticles, hydrogels, beads, nanofibers, films, membranes, and scaffolds. Chitosan thin films and membranes could be produced by multiple methods, like solvent casting and electrospinning; this will increase their suitability for medical use. Chitosan films and membranes could deliver various therapeutic drugs like antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antifungal agents, anticancer compounds, proteins, peptides, and nucleic acids. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties enhance therapeutic effects while minimizing side effects. This chapter shows various applications of chitosan films and membranes in drug delivery highlighting their potential to improve their performance.
