Abstract : This paper reports the design and implementation of a chipless Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based sensing system using six size-diversified spiral resonators working in the 3.5 GHz to 6 GHz range for sensing and identifying structural cracks in buildings. The system allows for non-contact, passive sensing through the measurement of resonant frequency changes related to crack formation and development. Simulations show frequency shifts of as much as 30 MHz based on crack type and size. The reflection coefficient for a healthy condition varies between -14.4 dB and -15.3 dB, while it deteriorates to -2.88 dB in case of heavy damage. From the analysis of each resonator's individual electromagnetic behavior, the system predicts with high accuracy the presence, depth, and severity of cracks, providing accurate structural health assessment and preventive maintenance.
