Asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism is not well recognized in Indian population and is considered rare. Estimation of serum calcium level is not part of routine comprehensive health checkup.
Symptomatic hyperparathyroidism produces significant effect on bone and kidney while the asymptomatic variety may cause very subtle changes only. The natural course of asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism is not fully established. But one longitudinal study showed 14 of 52 patients (27 percent) had progression of disease defined as the development of at least one new indication for parathyroidectomy.
In this study the overall incidence of asymptomatic hyperparathyroidism is assessed and also introduces auto analyzer and regular estimation of serum calcium in health check up.
